
…today. Exactly 60 years ago was the finest hour of Finnish sports history when the winner of nine Olympic gold medals Paavo Nurmi ran to the Olympic stadium with the Olympic torch.
Four years ago I started this blog with 25 blog posts themed Helsinki Olympics Today. I didn’t realize that most of the Olympic venues still exist and are in use. We still use infrastructure built for the games like Helsinki airport and Gin Long Drink introduced for the games is still one of our favourite alcoholic drinks. Before the games Soviet Union was not able to use its dirties cold war tactics to Finland thanks to the international attention we got.
Summer olympics have affected Helsinki probably more than any other host city. Finland was still recovering from the World War II when the games were held and Helsinki is the smallest city that has ever hosted the summer olympics. The effect was also doubled as Helsinki had to prepare for the olympics two times.
