Feissari…

feissari
…(from face-to-face) is a person who contacts people at busy streets and happenings in hopes of getting donations or memberships for NGOs like Unicef, Greenpeace, Amnesty International etc.

They have appeared to Helsinki streets in larger numbers a few years. Usually they don’t bother if you avoid eye contact but today it was sad to read a tweet about a Greenpeace feissari that began insulting a passer-by.

Painter Albert Edelfelt…

…was one of the first internationally recognized Finnish artists.

You might have seen his portrait of Louis Pasteur that is his most well-known work abroad. Finns probably recognize better some other paintins like Luxembourg Garden.

A Finnish Culinary Delight: Snagari…

…for late night eating on the way home from a bar.

Some traditional choices include lihapiirakka (Finnish meat pie) or makkaraperunat (“sausage fries”).

Large Scale Forest Fires from Russia…

…have been mentioned as one of the threats to Finnish nuclear power plants.

In reality Finns are more worried about the Russian Chernobyl-type Sosnovyi Bor power plant that is only about 70km away from both St. Petersburg and Finland.

It was a great day when Lithuania announced that a similar nuclear plant in Ignalina had been closed. Without the closure European Union wouldn’t have accepted the Baltic state as a member.
