Without Nuclear Power…

…we would need more of these. Coal plants pollute and kill every day, nuclear plants only when there are rare accidents.

One day we hopefully have safe, renewable and economical energy sources to cover our needs but until then we only have bad choices.

A Wheel…

…an opportunity or a threat?

Yesterday there was a discussion about social media on Finnish tv (in Finnish) and viewers were also able to participate using Twitter, Facebook and text messages. The title of this post is the best Twitter comment of the evening by @skrubu who also has a great eye for photographs.

The best part of the experience was to see how viewers started to write improvement ideas for the organizers using this tool during the tv program.

The program was targeted to wider audiences so I would have expected to hear more about things that have been achieved by using social media. The woman from @GreenpeaceSuomi did a great job in this and there were good comments from people like @mikkohypponen, @alexnieminen and @Taneli_Heikka. Understandably there wasn’t much new for someone who knew the basics. In Twitter many were disappointed. Blogs were hardly mentioned.

I’ll write more about my social media experiences (blogs, Twitter, Flickr, Facebook) during the next weeks in this blog. I joined Facebook because of something that happened in Botswana.

Nature Photographers…

…at Vanhankaupunginlahti.

Spring…

…cancelled?

They tortured us again with the summer time (daylight savings time) that is totally useless in Finland. We have lots of light during the summer anyway and plenty of darkness during the winter. The only effect is that next week many will be tired. Let’s get rid of this nonsense!

When I’m writing this I have no idea whether my alarm and tv recordings for Sunday will start at the correct time. That’s nothing compared to the extra work required in business it systems.

Russians changed the time for the last time. Wise decision!

Kaveria ei jätetä…

…no friend is left behind.

The expression that probably became well-known during WW II is heard quite often in Finland relating to team building, social security and many other things.

International Fast Food Chains Haven’t Been Successful in Finland…

…where some domestic companies are better adjusted to the local conditions of a small market. Many well-known brands like KFC and Burger King are not here at all.

Finns are among the heaviest coffee drinkers in the world but there is no Starbucks either.

An Orangutan…

…and two other primates.

Pullasorsa…

…or “bun mallard.”

City dwellers feed mallards and as a result they spend the winter in Helsinki although they are migratory birds by nature.

It’s President Paasikivi…

…didn’t you recognize? But is it his wife Alli on the right?

After WW II Paasikivi created the foundation of Finnish cold war foreign policy: Finland shouldn’t do anything to upset the Soviet Union. Disgusting but necessary to some extent.

“The beginning of all wisdom is the recognition of facts” reads on the monument. Today facts are fortunately a bit different as our neighbour is friendlier and less powerful.
