For Whom the Blog…

…tolls.

After I stopped posting daily I’ve been thinking about a new direction for the blog. I’ve had questions like:

  • Should I only post my better photos or should I post more often with less quality?
  • Will this be a photo blog or a Helsinki blog that has photos?
  • What is the role of text in this blog?
  • Will I strictly post just one photo in a post or will I more frequently include several photos in a post? (to tell a story, several photos from an event, …)
  • What themes the blog should have? (So far I’ve just shot everything that moves or doesn’t move.)

So my both readers, what do you think? What would you like to see here? Why are you here?

The only thing that is clear is that the blog must help me to to improve my photography skills in one way or another.

First off, I really enjoy your photos of Helsinki. I moved here a year ago and your eye has really highlighted what is unique about this city.

    In answer to your questions:

    - A single, high-quality photo around one theme or subject is best.

    - I prefer photos of Helsinki but areas around Helsinki are fine too. I point people to this blog when they want to see what the city looks like.

    - A little more description would be nice. If the subject was in an article or has a web site, add a link. Flickr has a great maps integration where you can pin photos onto a map. You could link to a posting of the photo on Flickr with that info. You could also use Flickr to host a gallery with a series of photos that tell the story.

    Thanks Ian,

I’d love to put the photos on the map. Where’s the Canon DSLR with GPS? Earlier I simply didn’t have the time for maps when I posted daily. For the same reason many of the descriptions have been quite awful.

I think I’ve linked a lot more than the average city daily photo blogger although the blog stats indicate that not so many people click them. The majority of regular vistors use an RSS reader so I have no idea what you are doing.

I like to follow your blog posts. I love Helsinki and glad to see known places and I like your vision of the city and other places.
I do not wait for “perfect” photo, I do not like too much photoshop, the mix of photographer individuality and city scenes is my strongest interest.
Everyday posting provides good “up” in techniques. And makes blog more personal, at least in my experience.
I started with the patriot idea to advertise the city (my city is not very welcoming structure..), and almost year later I see how I move into more my personal stuff, connected with the city. And (it is secret) I am completely indifferent to photography, I am more in painting.
I think you should realize what YOU want from your blog and follow the idea.
I needed a year to understand that blogging is joy, not some difficult serious exam on everyday basis :-) .
As for the text, I am afraid of long texts, never read them (but maybe because I prefer reading from paper. And in Russian).
As for number of photos, why not vary number per post depending on subject and your today mood?
PS. The cathedral looks like candy :-)
PPS. Sorry to be so long, your questions are exactly like the ones I asked myself not long ago.
    Good luck and freedom!

I’m also here for photos of Helsinki and occasionally some of the general area or elsewhere Finland would be cool too.

A bit of text is very welcome, it’s great to learn something new. But no need to be an essay! A link or two is handy. (I read from Bloglines.)

Number of photos, well, one is quite elegant in a way, but do as many as you want.

The main thing is it should be fun for you and not a chore.

    Thanks!

I’ve only just found your blog. Do You remember this boat? came up as a link to one of my posts.
Maybe you could look around wordpress and see which blogs you like. I know a lot of people like a single theme, such as photography, but there are also more eclectic pages. A blog is usually just a type of diary online, and what you want to post and how you want to post it depends on the mood of the day, or even the hour.

You have a GREAT CDP blog! I hope you won’t stop your daily postings!
I remember visiting this magnificent Helsinki Cathedral back in the 1980s!

    Thanks for all your replies,

I think most of the texts will be short as I don’t like to read much when I’m browsing photo blogs.

There are not many photoshopped photos in this blog. Generally I only use Adobe Lightroom adjustments that are allowed also for photo journalists but I’ve also made a few experiments on the dark side.

Something definitely needs to be done so that the subjects in the photos would be more interesting.
