The two day athletics competition has been held annually almost every year since 1945 (first one already in 1925) and it is one of the highlights of the sports year although it has been losing its significance.
What makes the competition really interesting is that every single performance counts since the competition is about points. The battle for places 5 and 6 can be just as exciting as the battle for places 1 and 2.

Tervasaari (tar island) was connected to the mainland in 1939 and it was opened for the public in 1970s. In the past there were warehouses on the island but today it is a very nice park island.
It was safer to store things like tar on an island due to the risk of fires.
