It’s Summertime (and useless change of time)

Once again people have been tortured thanks to daylight savings adjustments.

Once again people have been tortured today thanks to daylight savings time. Photo from the National Museum.

Daylight savings time (in Finnish kesäaika = summertime) is quite useless in Finland – the sun hardly sets during our summer so minor savings can only be made during spring and autumn. For a good reason many complain the need to change our daily routines twice a year for no obvious benefit.

I can understand the reasoning in countries that are closer to the equator. For me it’s quite disappointing to spend a summer in a place where the summer nights are long and dark.

200th Anniversary of the Porvoo Diet – Finland became a nation among the nations?

The Diet of Porvoo 1809 is one of the key milestones in the history of Finland. Centuries long Swedish rule had ended and the Grand Dutchy of Finland was created under Russian rule. For the next hundred years Finland had an autonomous status before becoming independent in 1917. The level of autonomy varied depending on the moods of the czars.

In the coastal city of Porvoo czar Alexander I famously said that Finland had became a nation among the nations. Finns took this too literally forgetting that the czar was still the head of state.

Change In Weather

Snowing has been replaced by sunshine.

Snowing has been replaced by sunshine.

I took less than two weeks ago photos of the same church and red brick building and then the weather looked completely different.

You are still going to see snow and ice in my photos because it’s not all gone – and I’m going to post some older photos as well.

Today’s weather forefast promises us sunshine, clouds, snowing and raining so I’m quite sure it can’t be completely wrong…
