Swimming stadium seen from the Olympic Stadium's tower. It is one of the venues that was built for the 1940 games. During its history, the pools have also been used to store fish and vegetables.
The 1940 summer olympics were originally given to Tokyo but since the WW II was already going on in Asia, the games were moved to Helsinki in 1938. A year later Winter War started when Finland was attacked by Soviet Union. After the three month war Finland was amazingly still independent and was still going to organize the 1940 games. But Hitler had other plans and the games were cancelled.
In addition to swimming stadium, many other 1952 venues were also built for the 1940 games. These include the olympic stadium itself (see my entry), velodromi (see my entry), Taivallahti rowing stadium (see my entry), Ruskeasuo horse riding arena (see a future entry) and Malmi shooting range.
Finnish speakers can read more about the 1940 games from here. Others can have a look at a 1940 poster that was also used in the 1952 games.

oh wow this looks exactly like the one we have here in Prague! But it was built 20 years later
I have a picture of it here http://kaknaprague.blogspot.com/2008/08/gloomy-bath.html if you want to have a look
Where was the Malmi shooting range located? And does it excist today?
I don’t know much about Malmi shooting range and I haven’t visited it.
I’ve read that it was in an area that is called today Kivikko. The shooting range was closed in 1993 and there isn’t much left. A building called Paukkulan maja was supposed to be saved but it was destroyed in a fire during the 1990s. I got the impression that it was either an arson or kids playing with fire.
Here is link to the official 1952 Olympic Report:

On page 59 in the PDF file (page 56 in the report) there is a picture of the Malmi shooting range. The ditch seen on the picture running across the shooting range can also been seen today on the fields just north of Kivikko and south of E75 and the Malmi Airport(Google Earth).
With our information I have been able to find the loactions of all the olympic shooting ranges since 1948, on Google Earth. I was missing 1952, until you helped me.
Great to see your Helsinki Olympics blog. I have linked to it in my Swimming Blog which is currently looking at Australian Olympic swimmers across all Games. I love this picture of the pool.
