The biggest heroes of the 1952 games were long distance runners Paavo Nurmi and Emil Zatopek. Finns were also very interested in the world’s first Miss Universum Armi Kuusela who returned to Finland during the games from her own competition. She was paraded on the streets and she took part in the ceremony where Hungarian footballers got their gold medals. Her iconic status has remained as she soon moved to live abroad.
From a Finnish point of view the greatest moment of the 1952 games and of the whole Finnish sports history was when the winner of nine olympic gold medals Paavo Nurmi ran to the stadium with the olympic torch and lit the olympic flame that was on the ground level.
Nurmi wanted to end his career by winning the olympic marathon in Los Angeles 1932 but Swedish Sigfrid Edström said “Paavo Nurmi is not going to run in the olympics.” causing a major dispute between Finns and Swedes. Nurmi was considered to be a professional athlete. That episode was definitely remembered in 1952 when Nurmi ran with the olympic torch. Edström was watching and he had become the president of the international olympic committee.
Emil Zatopek won 5000m, 10000m and the marathon in Helsinki. He is still the only one who has done that in the same olympics. Although the Czechoslovakian won the gold medals that “belonged to Finland” (at least in pre-WW II world), he became the most loved foreign athlete of all times in Finland. His wife Dana won the javelin, another sport loved by the Finns, an hour after Emil’s 5000m gold. They were also born on exactly the same day. Emil Zatopek’s death in 2000 was big news in Finland.
